In an online chat Monday on the Microsoft Network, Paul McGuinness, U2’s longtime manager, confirmed that the band will appear in the two-hundredth episode of The Simpsons, which will be broadcast this season on Fox. According to the ZooNation Web site, the episode is called “Trash of the Titans,” and it features Homer Simpson running for sanitation commissioner of Springfield after a tussle with a garbage man. U2 lends him a hand on the campaign front, but when Bono falls into one of his ecology tantrums, bandmates Larry Mullen and the Edge find themselves yawning along with Homer. The three of them then steal off to Moe’s for a cold one. U2, of course, isn’t the first big musical name to grace the Simpsons. Other guests have included the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, Spinal Tap, Michael Jackson, Paul and Linda McCartney, Cypress Hill, Tony Bennett, and many others.
